Let’s Talk Highlighters

IMG_7581

Today, I am talking about one of my favourite beauty products—highlighters. I have been wanting to dedicate a whole post to these game changers for quite awhile and have a variety of options to share, which I think are all absolutely fantastic. Highlighters, when used correctly, can completely awaken the face and add dimension to it, bringing radiance and life to a complexion. I don’t highlight everyday, but when I do I always question why I do not do it regularly.

I have five different highlighters to share, so if you want to hear more, carry on reading!

L to R – Dim Light, Incandescent Light, Radiant Light, Aurora, Pearl Shimmer, Ivory Lace and Kitten Shimmer

The Pencil One

Chella Ivory Lace Highlighter Pencil – $18.00

I got this highlighter pencil in one of my ipsy Glam Bags earlier this year and I am still obsessed with it. It has a creamy consistency so it applies and blends into the skin easily, but also sharpens like a dream. I don’t use this on my cheekbones, but on my brow bone, as well as the inner corners of my eyes and on my Cupid’s bow. It allows easy precision to highlight specific areas of the face and it is just the best in regards to a highlighter pencil.

The Liquid One

Stila All Over Shimmer Liquid Luminizer in ‘Kitten Shimmer’ – $26.00

Personally, I am not a fan of liquid highlighters for highlighting my cheek and brow bones. However, as an all over highlighter I love this liquid gold. I mix a bit of this with either my moisturizer or foundation and it just helps give my face all over radiance and a healthy glow. It does look quite scary and I was definitely intimidated by it at first, but it blends seamlessly into the skin and looks really natural. It contains no nasty ingredients, so I’m completely comfortable applying this all over my face and it leaves you with a dewy base.

The Cream One

Illamasqua Gleam in ‘Aurora’ – $46.00

This highlighter means business and a little goes a long way with it. I reserve this highlighter for special occasions as it is really intense, but looks gorgeous in photographs. It has a creamy, buttery consistency and leaves you with a dewy glow. It is a gorgeous champagne shade with pearlescent pigment and picks up the light incredibly. Just make sure you use a gentle hand and pat this into the skin or else it can disrupt your makeup.

The Luxury One

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette – $67.00

Now, I’m not one that thinks you need to splurge in order to have high-performing products. However, if you want to splurge on a highlighter this is it. It is worth all the hype and I am head over heels in love with this palette. This palette comes with three finishing powders which all work to filter out harsh light and leave you with a lit from within complexion. The middle shade ‘Incandescent Light’ is exclusive to the palette and the one I use the most, as I will apply it all over the face, specifically under the eye. ‘Dim Light’ is a neutral peach beige colour which I love swiping onto my cheeks. I don’t use ‘Radiant Light’, which is a golden beige, too much, as I think it works best with my skin when I have a bit of a tan.

The Wallet-Friendly One

Flower Beauty Glisten Up! Highlighter Chubby in ‘Pearl Shimmer’ – $11.00

Drugstore highlighters are hard to come by (at least here in Canada), but if you can get your hands on this, it is an easy and affordable option. I think chubby sticks are great for beginners as you just swipe it onto your cheekbones, brow bone, wherever and blend it out. This has a gorgeous marbleized effect with a silky consistency which makes applying it and blending it a breeze. It offers a sheer highlight so it is easy to wear everyday and you don’t have to worry about applying too much of this product. Overall, I am really impressed with it, especially for the price.

Do you have any highlighter recommendations? I’d love to know! I still need to get my hands on theBalm Cosmetics Mary-Lou Manizer which has been on my list to try for ages. As affordable highlighters go, I would love the Essence Cosmetics Soo Glow! Cream to Powder Highlighters to come to Canada, as I am a huge fan of that brand.

  2. I rarely see any Flower products in blog posts and I’ve been really curious about the brand. Good to know you’ve found a nice affordable one there. I love highlights and feel incomplete without a dust of something on my cheeks! Great post 🙂 xo J
