First off, yesterday marked 1 year since I posted my first blog post here on ‘ellerow’ (sheds tears of happiness). A year flew by and I am so happy that I am still creating and posting content—this blog has been an amazing creative outlet and I love doing this so much. My very first blog post was about my trip to Montreal for Osheaga, which you can read here if you like.
Secondly, I have decided to do ‘No Spending August’, which means I have banned myself from purchasing any clothes or makeup for the month of August. This is to not only to help me save money, but also force myself to use and wear what I already have on my vanity and in my closet. I always purchase new clothes and makeup in the fall as apart of ‘back-to-school’, so I just need to resist temptation for a little longer. The first couple of weeks were easy, but now I find myself perusing the Sephora website regularly and frequently checking the ‘New Arrivals’ on the H&M website. I decided to put it out there and make ‘No Spending August’ official here on my blog so that I actually stick to it.
However, I have bought a few beauty and clothing bits in July which I wanted to share on here as a little collective haul.
The Beauty Bits:
I decided to grab a couple more Illamasqua products while they were still 50% off at The Bay. I grabbed another Illamasqua Lipstick in the shade ‘Sonnet’, which is a matte formula and in a pretty, peachy nude shade. This purchase may or may not have happened shortly after watching this video by Tati from GlamLifeGuru. I also grabbed the Illamasqua Eye Colouring Pencil in ‘Vow’, as I love using nude eyeliner on my waterline to help brighten my eyes and counteract any redness. I have been using the Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Kohl Kajal in ‘Nude’ for ages, but wanted a cruelty-free alternative, so I decided to give this high-end one a go. This pencil is more of a cream shade whereas the Rimmel one is much more nude, but it still offers a creamy formula that is gentle along the delicate eye area and I can also use this as a highlight on the inner corners. And of course, something I purchased last month and have been in love with is the Essie Nail Polish in ‘Peach Side Babe’. I have mentioned it a few times so I won’t repeat myself—I absolutely love it.
The Clothing Bits:
Every summer, I end up buying at least one new bathing suit. I have wanted a plain black bandeau top and grabbed this Topshop Black Bandeau Bikini Top in the sale. It fits perfectly as it ties in the back, has an underwire to give my chest a bit of a boost and support and I love the gold heart details on the end of the straps. I also finally got myself a pair of high-waisted bathing suit bottoms. I originally wanted these American Apparel high-waist bottoms, but the mesh sides just felt too much like I was wearing lingerie, so I went with the American Apparel Nylon Tricot High-Waist Swim Brief. These fit like an absolute dream—they conceal any bloating, define a small waist and make your legs look longer. I really hope these keep their shape over time as they are perfect.
I grabbed this Cream Blouse from H&M (similar here) which was reduced from $49.95 to $15.00. I love the bohemian vibe of this top from the loose boxy fit and the wide sleeves. It reminds me of something I would of worn when I was around 13 when the loose sleeved tops were really popular. I think this is a great basic to pair with either something more casual like some distressed denim shorts and sandals (even throw on a floral crown and embrace your inner flower child) or dress it up with a pair of black skinnies and a statement necklace.
I also ordered a few things off Boohoo, the first being the Vicci Stripe Shift Dress I mentioned in this post. Now, don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love the look and feel of the dress, but online it shows it is short sleeve, when it really is 3/4 sleeve, which was rather annoying. I know I’ll still get a ton of wear out of this dress, but the hunt for the perfect, casual striped t-shirt dress continues. The dress though, fits exactly how I wanted it to—fitted in the arms and hips but loose around the stomach and chest.
I also picked up the Boohoo Laura High Neck Crop, as I am trying to get more comfortable wearing crop tops. I’m not (usually) self-conscious about my stomach, but the fact I bloat so easily makes me never want to bother with crop tops. However, I really liked the high neck of this one and the wrap front on it and I can easily dress this up or down. I’m determined to wear this out with a pair of high-waisted pants and some heels.
Lastly, I picked up the Boohoo Kaitlin Organza Layered Shell Top, as I have wanted a top like this for ages. The photos don’t really do it justice, but I love the look of the organza over top of the the asymmetrical material underneath. I think it’s so different and quite frankly, a little daring for someone like myself that often plays it safe with clothing. I actually have an event coming up which I am going to wear it to, so I am excited to style it!
