Priming and setting my makeup is so important for me if I want my makeup to last all day and my skin to stay shine-free—especially in the Summertime—as my combination skin becomes much more oily. The weather here has been a little all over the place, but when it’s hot, it’s hot, and the last thing I want is my makeup sliding off my face and becoming a sweaty mess (great mental image for you).
These are my current favourite, must-have products for long-lasting, shine-free makeup for the Summer:
I feel like I have been mentioning this primer a lot on my blog, but it is just one of the best mattifying primers I have tried. I love how this applies, as it leaves my skin feeling soft and looking matte and makes the perfect base before makeup application. My makeup applies so much easier when I use this primer and it really helps mattify my concealer or whatever liquid product I apply to my face that day. It is expensive and I was lucky to snag it when it was on for an amazing deal, but I think if you have the budget for it, it really is worth trying. I’m hoping to find a good drugstore dupe for this product, so stay tuned.
This is a newer eye primer I have been testing out and I am a huge fan of applying this regardless if I am wearing eye shadow or not. It has a yellow tint, which helps neutralize the redness around the eye area, and when applied under the eye helps hide the appearance of dark circles. It really does ‘blur’ any imperfections, but more importantly keeps my eyelids matte and is perfect for applying under the eye before using concealer. It has a mousse-like texture, which I really like, and though I find it takes a little effort to completely blend in, the end result is worth it. This product also claims to intensify your eyeshadow, which I can’t vouch for as of yet.
I got this little guy in my Ipsy Glam Bag for May and it is proving to be my go-to whenever I am wearing lipstick. I always thought lip liners were unnecessary, but now that I have been wearing lipstick more often I’m realizing how much of a necessity it is. This universal pencil is perfect as it can be paired with any lip colour and you don’t have to have a super precise hand as, well, it’s clear. I can wear a coral lip with confidence during the day thanks to this lip liner as it keeps the product in place. It creates a smooth base for your lip products, filling in any fine lines and helps with the longevity, as well as preventing your lip product from feathering. You do not need to worry about your lip colour melting off thanks to this lip liner. Only negative? I’m finding it a pain to sharpen (wish it had a retractable tip).
If you have been reading my blog from the beginning then you may have realized I never really wear foundation. Instead, I opt for just concealer to conceal the areas that need concealing and set everything with powder. During the Summer I wear even less concealer (and embrace those acne scars and freckles) and really only wear it under my eyes and on any noticeable blemishes. I get the most shine on my forehead and really try to avoid applying any concealer there during the Summertime. I showed this loose powder foundation in this post and am really enjoying it right now. It helps even out my skin tone—especially on my forehead—offers buildable coverage and since it is a powder, I don’t have to worry about it melting off like I do with concealer or foundation.
I love this affordable, cruelty-free brow gel. I have a few brow gels, both drugstore and high-end, but this is the one I reach for the most. My brows are very fair and are pretty much non-existent, so I fill my brows in on a daily basis. No matter what I get up to that day I know I don’t have to worry about my brows with this stuff. I have worn it to the gym (yes, I even fill my brows in when I go to the gym, as it makes me feel more confident) and my brows still look great after an intense workout. I have also fallen asleep on more than one occasion with my makeup on (I know, I know, so bad for your skin), but my brows are still intact the following morning. This stuff just locks your brow colour in place without making your brows crispy and I highly recommend it.
I have recently been testing out Essence Cosmetics (blogpost covering those products coming soon) and I am won over by this pressed powder. I dust this along my t-zone and am shine-free almost all day long. It really helps mattify the skin and I do not rely on my blotting tissues as much when I use this powder. This powder is translucent so it will work with all skin tones and blends in well and does not give you a powdery look. This product, along with all Essence Cosmetics products, is extremely affordable, so if you have been looking for an inexpensive mattifying powder—look no further.
My holy grail Summer product. If I am wearing a bit more makeup than my usual day-to-day look this stuff keeps it locked in in place. This product does not feel sticky or anything of that sort on the skin, but instead is really cooling and refreshing on the face. It sets quickly and once it has set you won’t even feel it on. You can spray this before and/or after makeup application and also sprits it throughout the day to refresh the makeup, but thanks to the Illamasqua primer, I have just been using this at the end to ensure my makeup stays in place and remains shine-free. I also find it helps blush and bronzer from fading throughout the day.
Do you have any recommendations for products that keep your makeup in place all day and shine-free? Let me know!
