Review | NYX Cosmetics Doll Eye Mascara

IMG_5571I have been on the hunt for an affordable drugstore mascara for what feels like ages. I have tried a few that seemed promising based on their reviews, but just did not work for me. My lashes are very fair and thin, so they need all the help they can get. NYX Cosmetics is a brand that is slowly becoming more available in Canada, which is great, as they are cruelty-free and very affordable. I was drawn towards their Doll Eye Mascara because of the brush, which is similar in shape to the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara.

This mascara comes in 3 formulas: Long Lash, Volume and Waterproof (all in black)

Now, I am not the biggest fan of waterproof mascaras because they dry out my lashes so much. However, when I was in Rexall (I am in there way too much), I gravitated towards the waterproof one as my eyes have been a watery mess and smudging under my eyes has been an annoying, daily occurrence.

This mascara claims to ‘extend lashes to almost faux proportions’ thanks to a blend of natural oils, vitamin E and nylon fibres. Plus, who doesn’t want doll eye lashes? I have been using this mascara for a couple of weeks now and the verdict is in.

So, what do I think of this mascara?

I LOVE IT.

It gives my lashes great length, separates them and lasts all day, with no smudging or flaking. It felt so liberating to be out all day and not in a constant state of paranoia that my mascara is a bleeding disaster. I also love the brush. The shape of the brush allows it to hug the base of lashes and it also holds onto the perfect amount of product. The brush makes it super easy to apply to both the top and bottom lashes.

This mascara did not irritate my eyeballs and lasted all day long—my lashes looked the exact same from 9am to 5pm.

The only negative thing I will say is because it is waterproof I do find it drying on my lashes and it does take a bit more elbow grease to remove. I find coconut oil works best as I can really massage it onto my eyes to break up the mascara and also nourish my eyelashes. It also is not build-able so you do need to work fairly quickly before it dries (this was not a big deal for me).

Repurchase?

Absolutely. For an affordable, drugstore mascara I am absolutely thrilled with the results. Since I don’t typically wear waterproof mascara I think next time I will try the volume formula—as I usually opt for volumizing mascaras—and compare it to this one in regards to smudging and staying power. I also would love for it to be paraben-free, but I guess you can’t have everything, right?

This mascara retails for around $10 and I definitely think it is worth checking out.

Have you tried this mascara or any of the other NYX mascaras? What are your thoughts?

ellerow.
