Birthday | OOTD & FOTD

Last week I turned 24, which means I only have one more year in the 18-24 demographic. Which means I have one more year to get myself where I expected to be when I graduated high school; done post-secondary, have my career job, engaged and perhaps having my first child. Yeah right 17 year old Leah. My life is definitely not where I planned it to be those 6 years ago and you know what, that’s okay. These last few years have been a roller coaster of ups and downs, but I’m the happiest I’ve been in awhile and I’m excited to see where this year takes me.

Anyways, onto the look I went with for my birthday dinner.

I’ve been really lazy with my hair lately and rarely use heat on it, which my hair is thankful for. I am also in desperate need of a haircut so I opted for a milkmaid braid. This hairstyle definitely emphasizes the fact my hair is like three different colours right now (I’m growing out my natural hair colour).

Makeup Worn:

Maybelline Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser

Sonia Kashuk Liquid Light Concealer

Sonia Kashuk Undetectable Pressed Powder

Measurable Difference Brow Amplifying Tint & Lift

Too Faced Shadow Insurance

Stila Eye Shadow Trio in ‘Warm’

Maybelline Line Stiletto Liquid Eyeliner

Sephora Outrageous Volume – Dramatic Volume Mascara

Sephora Bronzed and Blushing Face Palette

No Cosmetics No Bleeding Lips – Secret Lip Liner

Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Natural Lipstick in ‘N9’

I kept my face makeup natural looking and decided to fuss with some eye shadow and liquid liner aka my weak points. I swept ‘Sorbet’ all over my lid and used ‘Brûlée’ as a highlight from my Stila Eye Shadow Trio (doesn’t show up that well in the photos).

I also tested out two products from my Sephora haul and am quite pleased with both. The bronzed and blushing palette is perfect for my pale skin (so long summer tan), as it is very natural looking. It’s not extremely pigmented, which is usually a negative for people, but I love that as it’s great when I need a quick makeup look (school) and it is build-able as well. The lip liner seemed to do the job; my lipstick did not bleed whatsoever.

Since it was my birthday I decided to test out the lipstick I got in my birthday gift from Sephora. I have never tried anything from MUFE (been eyeing their concealer for ages though), so I was eager to test out a new brand. The lipstick is definitely creamy and moisturizing like it says it is and I love the coppery tone. However, it does need to be reapplied throughout the day/night, as it was pretty much non-existent after eating and drinking. I’m sure it performs better with a lip liner as the No Bleeding Lips only kept it from bleeding, but did not help with the staying power whatsoever.

Being an awkward human.

What I’m wearing:

Tank – H&M

Blazer – Urban Outfitters

Trousers – Banana Republic

Loafers – H&M

Necklace – Vintage

Ring – Vintage

Midi Rings – Aldo Acc.

Nail Polish – OPI ‘Glove You So Much’

Beautiful autumnal coloured birthday flowers.

We went to Port Restaurant for dinner as I had been craving seafood and Port does tasty scallops. We got the jalapeño cornbread to start which is served with a maple chipotle butter. The butter was a perfect balance of smoky and sweet with subtle heat from the jalapeños. It complimented the cornbread perfectly which was moist and not gritty like some cornbreads I’ve had. It is also a very generous portion for the price.

For my meal I went with their shrimp and scallop linguine, but asked for no pancetta and for a red sauce instead of the cream sauce. It definitely satisfied my craving for seafood and the dish was subtly sweet thanks to the caramelized onions. My friend Shelly has a fantastic blogpost of Port Restaurant which you can read here. Be warned: you may drool all over your keyboard from the amazing food photography.

With our bellies happily full we decided to waddle to the beachfront for a bit. Port Restaurant is located along Frenchman’s Bay by the marina. Despite the water being so polluted and having the power plant in the distance, it really is a lovely area to walk through.

A moment of brotherly/sisterly love?

Feeling a bit more digested we headed home for tea and dessert. I’m not the biggest cake person, but I LOVE cupcakes, which probably makes no sense. I just have that logic that miniature = better. Like when I go to Sephora and obsess over the miniature sized products.

Anyways, I went with cupcakes from Bunner’s, a completely gluten-free and vegan bake shop. I’m by no means gluten-free or celiac (see pasta photo), but can always appreciate a good gluten-free baked good. I went through a period last year where I tried my hand at gluten-free baking and it was a disaster. Bunner’s cupcakes are far from my sad attempts and though they are dense, which I find with most gluten-free baked goods, they are so incredibly moist and flavourful. I went with the classics, vanilla and chocolate (their chocolate cupcake is definitely my favourite and a must try), red velvet and wait for it, salted caramel apple. It was a heavenly, messy concoction (didn’t expect their to be salted caramel inside the cupcake as well, yum).

I’m now off to stand staring into the horizon, as I ponder being 24, whilst Simon & Garfunkel’s ‘The Sound of Silence’ plays quietly in the background.

  1. Thanks for linking to us, Leah! Glad you had a wonderful birthday – I hope you’re putting your new mug from your good friend ME to good use tonight 🙂 Also, tell me more about Bunners sometime – they look like they would fit well on The Big Eat Ontario. Happy birthday you awesome woman!

I also just picked up that MUFE birthday gift set at Sephora! I think the lipstick looks better on you with your light hair than on me with my dark hair currently.

Copper shades I find hard to wear. I never liked them either when my hair was dark, but much prefer them now!
